In September 1938 Adrian left the College to join the Military Academy at Breda as a Gunnery Cadet Officer. In June 1940 Adrian was serving with the Royal Netherlands East Indies Army when the Germans invaded and he was discharged from military service. |
| In October 1941 commenced his journey to the UK. Travelling via Antwerp, Brussels, Lille, Paris and Toulouse, Adrian was taken to the Dutch Refugee Camp at La Fourgette and from there to the French camp at Clerfond for enforced work. Quickly realising he was unable to progress further, Adrian returned to Paris and commenced a second attempt via Paris - Brussels - Geneva - Barcelona - Madrid, arriving in Lisbon in March 1942. In April Adrian travelled by air to Bristol and then on to London where, in May 1942, he was recruited by the SOE.
