Miscellaneous Information
Born 20 June 1909, Tegal, Dutch East Indies (modern-day Java). In 1914 the family re-located to Holland, initially to The Hague, and after WW1, to Hilversum near Amsterdam. In 1932 Karel graduated from Delft University in Chemical Engineering and commenced employment as an engineer at the Bataafsche Petroleum Maatschappij in the Dutch East Indies. In 1937 he was transferred to Poeloe Samboe, an island in the Strait of Singapore. In May 1941, as the war intensified in the Far East, Karel and his wife travelled to London via the USA.
In June 1942 Karel was recruited by the SOE. Trained at West Court, Finchampstead, Scotland and Brickendonbury, Hertford, Karel was identified as a leader and organiser for the field. Karel was appointed as the replacement for George Jambroes who had been dropped three months before to form the "Marrow" Section, intended to implement the "Plan for Holland". Unfortunately, George had been captured on landing, and this too was to be Karel's fate. Please click on his biography to read more details of how and why he fell into the Germans' hands as a result of the Englandspiel counter-intelligence operation.
BK Citation: "He has distinguished himself as a member of a secret intelligence agency that has dispatched him in the years between 1940 and 1945 to enemy held territory where he had to perform life threatening actions under extremely trying circumstances that ultimately led to his death by enemy counter-action".
