Miscellaneous Information
Walter was born 31 January 1921 in Winnipeg, Manitoba. His father, Wasyl was born in Kiev, Russia and mother born in the Ukraine. His father worked as a Fireman and they all lived at 1078 Magnus Avenue, Winnipeg. Walter's schooling was at Lord Nelson, 1926-1935, Isaac Newton 1935-1937 (commercial) and St. John Tech, 1935 - 1937( electrical, wood turning and machine shop). He was at home between 1937-1941 and then worked as a machinists helper in the CPR shops in Western, Winnipeg between 1941-1942. The sports he enjoyed were hockey, football and baseball and his hobby was amateur radio mechanics. |
Walter had previously served in the 58th Coast Bty, in Vancouver as a gunner and was discharged from the Canadian Active Service Force, 15th (Van.) Coast Regiment on 23 February 1943 to enlist in the R.C.A.F. He had enlisted there on 9 April 1942. Walter then enlisted in R.C.A.F. on 24 February 1943 and the following year Embarked for the U.K. on 30 March 1944. After arrival he went to 3 PRC, followed by 24 OTU on 2 May 1944, 61 Base and then on to 424 Squadron on 11 October 1944. He was killed just three weeks later. |
