DFM Citation: This NCO has completed 19 operational sorties totalling 124.30 hours as Captain of Lancaster aircraft and has always proved most reliable and shown the greatest determination in carrying out his operations. He has operated against many of the most heavily defended targets in Germany and also Italy including the daylight attack on Milan on 24th October. 1942. On one occasion while attacking Cologne and on his bombing run, drifting cloud obscured the aiming point. He broke off the attack and in spite of the most intense opposition, made a second run, enabling his Bomb Aimer to drop their bombs with greater accuracy. On yet another occasion, he was attacking the Fiat factory in Turin. While some way from the target, his aircraft was repeartedly hit by flak, but he carried on and pressed home the attack scoring hits on the objective. Recently he took part in the highly successful raid of 1st March, 1943, on Berlin. His excellent work has earned him the confidence and admiration of his whole crew and I strongly recommend tha award of Distinguished Flying Medal. The recommendation for the award was made by his Squadron Commander on the morning of 5th March, 1943. This NCO was missing on the night of 5th/6th March 1943, on the raid on Essen. |
