Miscellaneous Information
Flight Sergeant Harold Mino's older Brother John, ten years his senior, was also a Flight Sergeant Air Gunner with 158 Squadron at RAF Lissett flying Halifax III's. On the night of 15 October 1944 twenty-four aircraft of 158 Squadron were detailed for an Operation to Duisburg. One of those which did not take off (due to a failure of the starboard outer) was LK850 'H' with John on board as the Rear Gunner. Unable to climb and running out of runway the Pilot F/Lt Duncan White McAdam, RAFVR, retracted the undercarriage and the aircraft came to a stop but was on fire, with of course, the full bomb load on board. The crew exited the aircraft but it was discovered that John was not with them as he was stuck in his turret. F/Lt McAdam, without thought of his own safety, went back into the burning aircraft and freed him using the fire axe; allowing them both to get clear. The fire took hold and the subsequent explosion of the bomb load badly damaged the nearby MZ862 which had swung off the runway on takeoff and suffered a collapsed tailwheel, wrecked the technical buildings occupied by the Radar Section and caused significant damage to the airfield. F/Sgt John 'Jack' Mino (1913-52), sadly died in Toronto, Ontario as a result of injuries sustained in a car accident aged just thirty-nine. |
