Pierre was born on 21 March 1922 at Edmonton, Alberta. His father, who died in 1924, was a barrister and both he and Pierre’s mother were born in Montreal. He had brothers Louis, Raymond, Jacques, and Emile. Both Raymond and Emile were serving overseas in the Canadian Army, and he also had a sister Simone. His mother had re-married so he also had three half siblings, Julius, Joan and Joyce Burger. Pierre attended Grandin School 1928-1937 (grades 1-8) and St Joseph’s High 1937-1941 (Senior Matric). He then went to night school at McTavish Business College, 1940-1942 (shorthand, typing and book keeping). He enjoyed swimming and tennis and his hobby was photography. Pierre spent seven years undertaking RCAF Cadet work, three of them as Company Captain and he then went to work in the yard of J.C. Burger Lumber Company, Edmonton. |
He enlisted on 23 January 1942 and Embarked from Halifax after early training for the U.K. where he arrived at 3 PRC on 5 June 1943.
