Miscellaneous Information
| Jack Lockwood was from a local farming family of Scampton and surrounding villages. He was born in September 1920 and had a love of horses, winning several point-to-point events. He took over the running of Spridlington Grange Farm in 1938 but answered the call for recruits at a local cinema by enlisting in the Territorial Army cavalry regiment. He was called up at the outbreak of war but then decided to remuster for the RAF Volunteer Reserve. He trained as a Sergeant Pilot in Canada and the US before being posted to No. 179 Squadron Coastal Command at RAF Chivenor in Devon. The squadron flew modified Wellington bombers with special searchlights known as Leigh Lights, which were ideal for finding submarines just below the surface at night. |
| The crew’s first operation was on 7th July 1943 – an anti-submarine patrol, most likely over the Bay of Biscay. Their third operation on 12/13th August was also an anti-submarine patrol, the patrol itself being uneventful. However, as they returned to Chivenor at 0430 hrs, the visibility was poor and the crew decided to make a circuit to better establish their position, but in doing do crashed into a nearby hill and exploded due to the unused depth charges still being aboard. The machine was completely wrecked and all the crew perished. Sgt. Lockwood’s body was returned to Lincoln and he rests in St. John the Baptist churchyard at Scampton. |
