Miscellaneous Information
| Born on 17 December 1918 in Ter Aar, South Holland, Netherlands. Educated at Bilthoven Elementary and Secondary School, in January 1938 Jan was called up for military service in the Dutch Army, serving in the 4th Artillery Field Regiment until January 1939. On discharge, Jan was employed as a sailor on a Dutch Coastal Vessel that predominantly sailed between Holland and the UK. |
| In September 1939 Jan was mobilized into the Dutch Army and served until June 1939 when the German forces invaded Holland and he was conscripted into the Reconstruction Service where he served until October 1940. In July 1941 Jan returned to the sea, and whilst in dock in Sweden he deserted his ship and made his way by train to Stockholm where he volunteered for service in the Dutch Army Abroad at the Dutch Consulate. In March 1942 Jan sailed to the UK on the “Mira”, finally arriving in Scotland in May 1942. |
| In June 1942 Jan volunteered for service with the SOE (Dutch) Section. Following training at STS 6 West Court, Berkshire, STS 24 Knoydart, Mallaig, Scotland, STS 17 Brickendonbury Manor, Hertford, Hertfordshire, and STS 51 Ringway, Manchester for parachute training, Jan was allocated his operation - “Tomato”, the training of resistance groups in the handling of weapons and explosives and he awaited his drop date at Gaynes Hall, St. Neots, Huntingdonshire. |

| Reason for Aircraft Loss | Successfully dropped at the drop zone near Holten, Rijssen-Holten, Overijssel, Netherlands, the Gestapo were waiting. Unbeknown to SOE, the Germans had infiltrated the Dutch Section and were operating a very successful counterintelligence operation, known as "Englandspiel". Immediately arrested, Jan was interrogated by the SS and transferred to the SD prison Haaren in North Brabant. Following the escape of prisoners from Haaren on 29 November 1943 the remaining agents, including Jan, were first transported to the prison in Assen, then in 1944 to Rawicz. Most agents were then transferred to the Mauthausen concentration camp in Austria. Jan was executed, along with 22 other SOE agents, on 6 September 1944. |
