Miscellaneous Information
Derick (Freddie to some) was born on 9 August 1918 in Tottenham. He grew up in Church End, Finchley and attended Woodhouse School, Finchley, London. He was from a large family, including two sisters Barbara and Vera. His father had died by the time he married Evelyn Masters on 9 September 1939, at Abingdon Register Office. (Evelyn was very young but because of the war her father consented to the marriage). Derick joined the RAF straight from School in 1936 and qualified as a pilot on 17 December 1937. His first letter home was dated 29 April 1940 but his location wasn’t shown. He was involved in the successful Heligoland raids. He took part in the first bombing raid of the war at Kiel on 3 September 1939. During the next, on 21 April 1940, he was shot down near Aalborg. He carefully landed his burning aircraft on to a lake but all six crew were arrested and became prisoners of war. By 5 May 1940 he was in Dulag Luft and by 21 July of the same year he was a PoW with prisoner number 205. He was moved between various camps during his incarceration (14 January 1941: Kriegsgefanenenlager der Luftwaffe Gr II; February 1941: Stalagluft 2; 30 June 1941: Stalagluft 1; 14 April 1942: Stalagluft 3 Sagan; 23 March 1943: moved to Lazarett 742, Elsterhorst, Schweiz. He became one of the key members of the coding staff who were involved in coding otherwise mundane appearing letters home to family with hidden messages which allowed the authorities to understand what was happening in the camps. He eventually caught tuberculosis and was repatriated to UK on 4 December 1943 where he sadly died in King Edward VII Sanatorium in Midhurst, West Sussex (death registered in Midhurst & Petworth District) but not before seeing his son for the first time. His cremation was held at Abingdon where Evelyn was expected to arrive by train that morning. Unfortunately the train did not stop at Abingdon and took her onto Oxford so she missed the ceremony.
Invalided out of the service on 22 February 1944 due to ill health, retaining his rank. (Gazette 7 March 1944)
Included in the IBCC database since his untimely death was a direct result of his incarceration and therefore his operational service.
