Mentioned in Despatches January 1944
Sgt. E. Womble, the rear gunner, and one of the survivors stated in a PoW report: "The aircraft was hit in the front following concentrated fire and another hit put the Inter Com unserviceable. We did a second run over the target but the aircraft was out of control from repeated hits. I baled out at 1500 feet.” A Missing Research & Enquiry team later reported: ‘The aircraft was seen approaching the village of Zons from Dusseldorf, it was losing height and after circling Zons three times it crashed about 300 yards from the village. The aircraft exploded on impact.” (635 Squadron RAAF WWII Fatalities - Alan Storr)
Those who perished were initially buried in Sturzelberg Cemetery and reinterred on 17 June 1947.
