Born on Oct. 23rd 1920, in Scunthorpe. Enlisted on July 3rd 1940 with the RAFVR at No. 9 Recruits Centre, Blackpool, as aircrew. Ended his training with 10 OTU until May 27th 1944 when he was moved to 41 Base (Martson Moor) and crewed up before being posted to 78 Squadron. His first operation was on the night of June 5th, 1944 in preparation for D-Day. He was lost on his fifth operation, having only been operational for just one week. |
Sadly, before Freddie left for his last operation, he sent his wife one last telegram that simply said: "Leave on tuesday now love - Freddie."The following morning she received another telegram informing her that her husband was missing. |

Operation | Amiens to bomb railway installations. Part of a 671 aircraft force to further hamper lines of communications leading to the Normandy area. Cambrai and Caen attacks were scattered but Amiens, Arras and Poitiers were accurate. 23 aircraft were Lost (3.4%) including that of Charles Mynarski VC, the subject of the Canadian Lancaster 'Vera'. |
