Miscellaneous Information
Lawrence was born on 8 December 1924 at Port Maitland, Ontario (Haldimand County). His father was a Fog Alarm Engineer who died on 3 August 1940, born Dunnville, Ont. and his mother was born in Cleveland, Ohio. Lawrence had a sister, Rebecca Louise and a brother Edward George. They lived in Dunnville, and Lawrence attended the Separate School #1 between 1930- 1936 (general course). He then went to Dunnville High School 1936-1940. This was followed by a Pattern Making and Foundry course at Hamilton Tech. in 1941 he attained a 2 year Junior Matric. He worked as an office clerk at the Monarch Knitting Company in Dunnville from 1941 until he enlisted. Lawrence enjoyed all sports and his hobby was building model aeroplanes. |
Enlisting on 15 March 1942, and after early training, Lawrence embarked from Halifax on 22 October 1943, arriving at 3 PRC in the U.K. on 31 October 1943. He then passed through 6 (0)AFU 25 January 1944, 22 OTU 7 March, 61 Base 27 May 1944, 419 Sqn on 8 July 1944 and 405 Squadron on 27 September 1944. |
The Germans buried six bodies (out of 14 from the two aircraft, which crashed close together) in a communal grave at Germering and the British authorities could only individually identify five of them. |
