Miscellaneous Information
Charles was born on 8 June 1916 at Regjna, Saskatchewan. His father was born in Scarborough, England and was a farmer, his mother was born in Germany. He had two sisters Ida and Mildred as well as a younger one Marie Smith who is shown as adopted. He attended Holy Rosary Separate school, Regina 1923-1927, Notre Dame school in Wilcox 1927-1930, St. Mary’s College, Brockville, Ontario 1930-1933 and then Campion College, in Regjna 1933- 1936. The sports he played were rugby, baseball, hockey and swimming. Between 1936-1940 he undertook odd jobs at a Regina Brewery, bottle washing etc. |
Charles enlisted on 18 August 1941 and after training was posted to the U.K. He embarked from Canada on 14 June 1942, arriving at 3PRC on 25 June. He then went to 7 AGS 11 August 1942, 22 OTU 1 September 1942, and 427 squadron on 7 November 1942. Sadly Joseph was lost on an operation on 30 January 1943 but his body was never found so sadly has no known grave. |
