Operation | Bonn. An entirely 3 Group operation. Approximately one third of 3 Group bombers were fitted with G-H blind bombing apparatus and the group were therefore tasked with bombing by day when there was cloud cover. G-H equipped aircraft were painted differently on the tail fins and aircraft without the equipment were ordered to find a leader to follow who was so equipped. This was the first time G-H had been used in major raids. Bonn was chosen because it was not of strategic importance and was little bombed so far, allowing for accurate reconnaissance. 128 aircraft, 1 lost. The raid was a complete success with the centre of Bonn being completely destroyed. |
