| James was born in Ritchie, Saskatchewan on 2 December 1916. His father was born in Bronte, Ontario and was a retired Salesman (he was disabled and died in 1942) and his mother was born in Rosseau, Ontario. James had a sister Margaret, and brothers John, Donald and Ronald. Private Ronald Rae lost his life in November 1944 whilst serving in the army and R/221847 F/S John MacCauley Rae also lost his life serving in Bomber Command. He was killed on 28 January 1945. James attended Brandon Public School 1922-1931, followed by Brandon Collegiate 1931-1936 where he completed Grade XI Standing. Both in Manitoba. James was also with the 1st. Battn Manitoba Rangers during 1931-1936. Sporting interests were golf, swimming and billiards. Between 1937-1940 James worked for The Codville Co.Ltd, wholesale grocers, where he was a Shipping Clerk and Stockman. |
| He enlisted in Winnipeg on 6 January 1941 and later embarked for the U.K. on 30 April 1942. Arriving at 3 PRC on 13 May 1942 he went through 26 OTU 4 August 1942, 156 Sqn.5 November 1942 and on to 115 Squadron the same day. |
