Miscellaneous Information
| Alec was born on 22 July 1913 in Erewash, Ilkeston, Derbyshire. His father was the headmaster of Jacksdale School and was a prominent member of his local community, having served on the Sutton Urban District Council. In the Great War, while at College, Alexander (Alex) joined the Army and was commissioned to the Notts and Derby’s Regiment, serving for four years. Alec's mother Ethel was also schoolteacher, she lived a long life dying in 1987 aged 95. From 1923 to 1928, Alec was a pupil at the King Edward VI School in Retford. Late in 1928 all the family emigrated to Australia, sailing from London to Sydney on the ship ‘Orvieto’ on the Orient Line. Alec was 14. Alec studied at the Sydney High School, until 1929. During that year, he took his Cambridge School Certificate, and thereafter moved on to New Zealand and trained to become a teacher. He was a teacher at the Westport Public School in New Zealand from 1931 to 1932 after which the family returned to the UK, where Alec continued teaching at Bolsover C of E School near Chesterfield, until 1935. |
| In May 1935 Alec enrolled in the RAF and began training to become a pilot. On 8 October 1935 Alec was given the rank of Pilot Officer (Acting), and the following year, on the 16th September, 1936 he was confirmed in that rank. On 15 June 1937, he was posted to 115 Squadron based at RAF Marham, near Kings Lynn, Norfolk and was to spend the rest of his career was spent with this squadron. Now 25 he was promoted to Flying Officer on the 16th April 1938 and, later that year, on 24 September, he married Barbara. She moved up to Norfolk with Alec, and lived near Downham Market. |
