Miscellaneous Information
Sgt Pope's body was washed ashore on 30th September 1940 and was buried the same day by the Germans.
Sgt Pope's grave was accidentally bombed by the RAF shortly after D-Day while targeting nearby fortifications. A retired headmaster from the area (Victor Pontais, who was also the President of the France-Grand-Bretagne Association) subsequently wrote to Sgt. Pope's family to explain that although the grave had been disturbed by the bomb, the grave digger had restored it and other affected graves afterwards.
IBCC is grateful to Sgt Pope's nephew, Roy Pope, for the additional information provided.
