Op 28 september 1942 voerden zes Britse Vickers Wellington bommenwerpers een gewaagde aanval bij daglicht it op schepen in het Dortmund-Ems kanaal bij Lingen. Het werd geen succes en één van de toestellen werd neergeschoten. Wellington Z1663 van 115 Squadron, een tweemotorige bommenwerper, werdom 18.02 ur neergeschoten door een Duits Focke Wulf Fw 190 jachtvliegtuig, gevlogen door Unteroffizier Kurt Knespel van de 10. Staffel van Jagdgeschwader 1. Het toestel stortte op deze locatie in het Ijsselmeer.
