Miscellaneous Information
| Sgt. Harry Mawson and F/O Michael Gisby successfully baled out of the aircraft but were captured by the German police. Along with F/O Leon Milner, a Flight Engineer from downed 460 Squadron Lancaster PB542, they were marched through the ruins of Essen on the orders of Wehrmacht Captain Erich Heyer. The two guards had orders from Heyer not to stop the local crowd if they decided to attack the three captured men as "they were going to be shot anyway". This order was said aloud so that some members of the crowd could hear what was said. The angry crowd started to hit the three men and threw sticks and stones at them. A German Corporal fired his pistol at one of the men wounding him in the mouth. When they reached the Wickenburg Bridge someone in the crow shouted "These are the dogs who have killed our wives and children. Kill them." The three men were shoved into the stream below. One of the men died from the fall. The other two men died from gunshot wounds from the bridge or at the hands of the angry crowd who kicked and beat them. These details were made public at a War Crime trial in 1946. Wehrmacht Captain Erich Heyer and a civilian were sentenced to be hanged and three other men were jailed for up to ten years. |

Last Operation Information
| Start Date | 12-12-1944 |
| End Date | 13-12-1944 |
| Takeoff Station | Little Staughton |
| Day/Night Raid | Night (7% moon) |
| Operation | Essen. 540 aircraft, 6 lost (1.1%). The last sizeable night raid on Essen. A very accurate attack on the Krupps works, it being singled out for discussion by Albert Speer during his post-war interrogations. 463 people were killed and 696 houses destroyed. The high death toll was due, in part, to the prison being hit with the loss of 201 prisoners. |
| Reason for Aircraft Loss | Hit by flak during the bombing run and exploded, debris being scattered over Mülheim |
