Attacked by a night fighter, compass, RT [radio transceiver] u/s, elevators u/s dinghy released, inner tank balance pipe shot away. Rear & mid gunner injured. Attacked 15 miles off enemy coast, landed Stradishall". |

Reason for Loss | Attacked 10 miles off the Frisians at a height of 10,000'. Rear gunner reported two flickering lights below and astern which he took to be lights on the ground when a burst of cannon and machine gun fire came level behind raking the fuselage, port wing. Rear gunner was seriously injured by machine gun fire and did not return fire. Mid Upper fired a burst in the direction of the fighter but did not see the fighter at all. The pilot, on seeing the tracer, put the aircraft into a corkscrew to starboard up and the fighter was not seen again. The rear gunner died of his injuries while the aircraft and other crew members returned safely to base. |
