Miscellaneous Information
Jack was born in Winnipeg, Manitoba on 3 March 1919. Both parents were born in Russia and both were deceased by the time of Jack's enlistment. His father was a labourer. Jack is shown as a Canadian Jew. He had four sisters: Anne, Molly, Rose, Lillie and Ettie. The schools he attended were David Livingstone, Winnipeg, 1926-1932, Aberdeen Public 1932-1934 and St. John’s High School, 1934-1936. His sport interests were occasional swimming, skating and basketball. Jack worked as a grocery salesman between the years 1936-1941 in four different stores. He then enlisted on 2 May 1942. |
After training he was posted to the U.K. and embarked from Halifax on 22 October 1943. He arrived at 3 RAF (PRC) on 31 October 1943, and continued to 3 (O) AFU 18 January 1944, 82 OTU 29 February 1944, 61 Base 6 June 1944 and 428 Squadron 8 July 1944. Jack’s aircraft was shot down on 2 November 1944 and he and two other crew members were captured and taken to the Rathaus. Three days later a Luftwaffe Officer arrived to take the prisoners into custody but when emerging from the Rathaus, they were greeted by angry crowds and shot dead. Many of the crowd were high-ranking Nazi leaders. |
