Miscellaneous Information
Roy was born on 24 February 1924 in Montreal, Quebec. His father, a Machinist, was born in Quebec and his mother was born in LIverpool, England. He had brothers John (who was in the navy) and Gordon (who was in the army, overseas). He went to St. Brendan’s School in Montreal between 1930-1940. Roy took part in most of the school sports. He worked for W.C. MacDonald in Montreal as an Apprentice Machinist from 1940 onwards and was also a Private in the Royal Montreal Regiment 1941-1942 until enlistment. |
After enlisting on 31 July 1942 and early training Roy embarked from New York on 4 May 1943 arriving in the U.K. at 3 PRC on 12 May. He then went on to 26 OTU. 18 May 1943, 1651 CU 19 August 1943, and 623 Squadron on 16 September 1943. Sadly, this young man at the age of just nineteen, lost his life on 3 October 1943. |

Operation | Kassel. 547 aircraft, 24 losses (4.4%). H2S blind marking aircraft overshot the aiming point badly and the visual markers could not compensate due to thick haze. Decoy fires were probably also used by the Germans. The Henschel and Fieseler aircraft factories were hit and the suburb of Wolfshanger was devastated, in part due to an ammunition dump being hit. 118 deaths on the ground. |
