| Herbert was born on 20 February 1920 at Kitchener, Waterloo County, Ontario. His father was born in Cornell, Ontario and he was a factory labourer, his mother was born at Maxville, Ontario. The schools he attended were Wyandotte Street School 1926-1934, Kennedy Collegiate, Windsor, Ontario 1934-1939 (Matric) followed by Walkerville Collegiate 1939-1940 (Matric). His sport interests Included football, basketball, hockey, and lacrosse. Herbert worked for Bendix Eclipse at Windsor as a machinist in 1940 and then for Hiram Walkers, also in Windso,r as a clerk from 1940 until enlisting on 25 August 1941. |
| After training he was posted to the U.K. and embarked from Canada on 27 October 1942 arriving at 3 PRC on 6 November 1942. He was then at 9(0)AFU 1 March 1943, 30 OTU 30 March 1943, 1662 CU 15 June 1943 and 156 Squadron on 31 July 1943. There are no further movements listed until Herbert’s death on 14 January 1944. |

| Operation | Brunswick. 498 aircraft, all but two of them Lancasters. First major raid on this town of the war. 38 Lancasters Lost (7.6%). The German controller tracked the bomber stream from just off the English coastline and many German fighters entered the stream over Bremen, continuing to score hits until the stream left the Dutch coast on the return leg. Pathfinder losses were unusually high (11 aircraft). The raid was not successful even though the town was not expansive alongside most targets. Many bombs fell in open countryside or in neighbouring towns. Only 10 houses destroyed. 14 deaths on the ground. |
