A memorial has been erected by the villagers of Aldborough in grateful memory of the crew, who gave their lives in steering a course to prevent the aircraft crashing on the village. |
David was born on 6 July 1922 at St. John’s, Newfoundland. His father was a tailor born in Edinburgh, Scotland and his mother was born in Birr, Ireland. He had two sisters Catherine and Moreen. The schools he attended were Springdale Street school 1930-1934, Bishop Field college 1934-1938 and then Memorial University College. 1938-1941, where he studied an Engineering Course. David worked at the Department of Natural Resources, Newfoundland as a surveyor 1938-1939, at Newfoundland Railway as a Fitters Machinist, welder and helper during 1940 and at U.S Engines, Newfoundland as a Surveyor in 1941. His sport interests were just a little hockey, football and softball, his hobbies were swimming and skating. After enlisting at Halifax on 23 October 1941 and finishing his initial training, he was posted to the U.K. and embarked from Canada on 27 October 1942. He arrived at 3 PRC on 6 November 1942, 10 (0) AFU. 1 March 1943, 24 OTU 29 June 1943, 1659 CU 20 September 1943, 405 Sqn 20 October 1943 and 432 Squadron 10 December 1943. Sadly David then lost his life on 2 February, 1944. |
