| He went by his middle name, Derek. He attended the local grammar school and was very keen on drawing aircraft. His family still have sketches that he drew. He came from a tight-knit family and he was a generous person, having helped put his younger sister through secretarial college. |
| His mother kept a vase of red roses by his framed photograph at all times because they were his favourite flower. |
| As with many families, his nephew was named agter him. |
