His wife Sonja was born on 10 July 1919 in Kolberg (now part of Poland called Kołobrzeg). Her parents were Elsbeth Biedermann (née Gerson) and Max Biedermann, both from Berlin. Coming from a Jewish family she was fortunate to be able to escape from Berlin in April 1939 and worked as an au pair in Hertfordshire before becoming a waitress in a café in Central London. It was there that she met Harold, who was a customer at the café. |
