| London Gazette: 19 May 1939 Issue 34627 p 3380 (no citation). On 30 March 1939, two Arab gunmen, armed with at least one pistol, shot and killed a Jewish police constable and made off with his rifle and ammunition. Johnston, unarmed and off duty, saw the two men and chased them. After a struggle, in which shots were fired by the assailants, Johnston recovered the rifle but the two attackers escaped. During the presentation of the medal, the Inspector General of the Palestine Police Force referred to Johnston’s action as ‘a particularly gallant one’. |
