| Reason for Aircraft Loss | Incendiaries from a Lancaster at a higher altitude lodged in the port wing and started a fire which could not be extinguished. (This was a perennial problem for early Halifaxes due to their limited operating ceiling which ultimately led to them being withdrawn from certain raids until the superior Mk III could be introduced). The aircraft was abandoned but it is thought that Sgt Hulse sustained injuries during the descent from which he later died. The remaining crew survived the war as PoW. |
