| Born 29 April 1921 in Thorington, Suffolk. Ernest was one of seven Brothers. He was known as 'Butch'. |
| His brother 5826572 Private Alfred Edward Hambling, 5th Battalion, Suffolk Regiment was killed 12 September 1944 aged 26. He was being transported with a large number of British and Australian PoWs, having already survived the “Death railway” in Burma, when the Rakuyo Mara was torpedoed by the American submarine USS Sealion. Alfred was amongst the 1,159 PoWs that died, which included 350 PoWs who survived the sinking but were killed when their lifeboats were bombarded by a Japanese Naval vessel the next day. He is remembered on the Singapore Memorial. Both brothers are remembered on the War Memorial at Layham, Suffolk. |

| DFM awarded for service with No. 97 Squadron. His father and brother William received it posthumously from the King at Buckingham Palace. |
