Terugkerend van een bombardement op het industriegebied te Bochum (deel uitmakend van een luchtvloot van 446 bommenwerpers) stortte op 14 mei 1943 's nachts om 2.30 ur de 4-motorige Engelse bommenwerper Halifax B II (JB 892 KN-E, deel uitmakend van het 77 ste squadron) neer op deze plek, na te zijn aangeschoten door een Duitse nachtjager boven het grensgebied bij Emmen.
