Miscellaneous Information
| William was born at Toronto, Ontario on 12 May 1914. His father was born at Montreal and was a manufacturer’s agent and his mother was born at Toronto. He had eight siblings. There were five sisters: Irene, Elizabeth, Corinne, Evelyn and Bernice and three brothers, Luke, Arthur and James. Sadly his brother J/3264 P/O James Paul Erly, who was also on the strength of Bomber Command, was killed in action on 22 August 1941 with 106 Squadron. The schools William attended were St. Augustine’s, Montreal, 1920-1928 Loyola High School 1928-1931 and D’Arcy McGee High 1931-1932. His sport interests were track and field, baseball, hockey and swimming. William had several jobs working as office clerk, stock clerk etc and was at Monterly Sales, Montreal as salesman/bookkeeper 1932-1938, at Supertest Petroleum Corporation 1938-1940, stocks and sales records, and then with Robert Simpson & Co. as a stock clerk 1940-1941. |
| William enlisted on 7 February 1941 and after training was sent to the U.K. He arrived at 3PRC on 15 January 1943, then went on to 23 OTU on 6 April 1943, 20 OTU 9 June 1943, 1652 CU 4 July 1943 and then to 158 Squadron on 12 August 1943. Sadly William was to lose his life from 158 Squadron the following month on 27 September 1943. |
