| John's Father, Donald, was 66 when he was born, a Tea Dealer born in New Scone, Perthshire. Violet, his second wife, whom he married in 1906 was twenty years younger. Violet died in 1923, aged 50 when John was just three years old. When Violet died they were living at 12 Lambolle Road, Belsize Park, London. |
| John was an Acting Pilot Officer prior to the War and resigned his Short Service Commission on 1 April 1939. At the time of the 1939 England & Wales Register he was living in Orpington, Kent, of independent means, and awaiting a return to the RAF. |
