Miscellaneous Information
Arthur was born at Smiths Falls , Ontario on 4 July 1924. His father was born at St. Stephen, New Brunswick and worked as a Bandsman for the RCAF and his mother was born at Smiths Falls. He had a sister Ruth Elaine and a baby brother, Stewart Bates, who had died in 1928 aged one year. These are the schools Arthur attended: Elgin School, Smiths Falls 1930-1936, Central school 1936-1937, Smiths Falls Collegiate 1937-1941, and Glebe Collegiate 1941-1941. His sport interests were tennis, baseball, hockey and swimming. Worked as a Lineman for the Bell Telephone Company between 1941-1942. |
He enlisted on 4 July 1942 and after initial training embarked from Halifax for the U.K.on 30 March 1944. He arrived at 3PRC on 8 April 1944, 1 (O) AFU 2 May 1944, 24 OTU 13 June 1944, 61 Base 13 September 1944 and 428 Squadron on 12 November 1944. Arthur sadly lost his life the following month on 28 December 1944 at the age of only twenty years. |
