| He attended Southland Boys' High School, Invercargill, between 1931 and 1933. Three brothers also attended the school. He was a keen tennis player while at school and afterwards. |
| On leaving school he was employed by the Kelso, Otara, and Glenham dairy companies in the Southland district as a cheesemaker. He enslisted on 2 March 1940, by which time he was dairy farming on his own account. |
| He enlisted at Levin on 17 August 1941 and on the satisfactory completion of his initial training he was posted on 29 September to No. 1 Elementary Flying Training School, Taieri. He embarked for Canada on 17 December 1941. Shortly after arrival in Canada F/O Dillon was posted on 2 January 1942 to No. 3 Service Flying Training School, Alberta, where on the 24 April he was awarded the flying badge and commissioned in the rank of Pilot Officer. On 24 October he was promoted to Flying Officer. Continuing his training he proceeded in May 1942 to No. 6 Bombing and Gunnery School, Mountain View, Ontario, where he trained on Northrop Nomad, Fairey Battle, Yale, Anson, and Bolingbroke aircraft. On 17 August he was posted to No. 34 Operational Training Unit, Pennfield Ridge, New Brunswick and here trained on Ventura aircraft. In November he proceeded to No. 1 Y Depot, Halifax, Nova Scotia for embarkation to the United Kingdom. Arriving at No. 3 Personnel Reception Centre, Bournemouth, on 12 December 1942, F/O Dillon was posted to No. 98 Squadron, Foulsham, Norfolk on 20 January 1943, where he trained on Mitchell aircraft. On 15 May he was posted to No. 1663 Conversion Unit, Rufforth, and here he trained on Halifax aircraft. On 19 June he was posted to No. 76 Squadron, Holme-on-Spalding Moor. |

| Operation | Hamburg. 740 aircraft, 30 losses (4.1%). The raid failed due to a large thunderstorm over the target. Many crews turned back of bombed alternative targets. At least four aircraft were Lost due to icing. No PFF marking took place and bombing was scattered as a result. Many nearby towns were bombed, particularly Elmshorn due to a house being struck by lightning and crews spotting the fire through the clouds. |
