Miscellaneous Information
Roy was born at Frankford, Ontario, on 17 November 1921. His father was born at St. Ola, Ontario and was a Section Foreman and his mother was born in England. He had four brothers, Frederick, Arthur Charles who was at Camp Borden, Howard, Richard and Ronald and a sister Gladys. Roy attended Glen Ross Public school from 1929-1935 and the sports he took part in were hockey and ball games. He took a short cookery course during 1934-35 and was then employed in farming until enlisting in 1941. |
He embarked from Halifax on 25 March 1944 and then arrived at 3(RCAF) PRC on 3 April 1944. He was then at 28 OTU on 25 April 1944, 11 Base 13 July 1944, 61 Base on 18 July 1944, finally reaching 419 Squadron on 7 September 1944. Sadly on 29 December 1944 Roy was to lose his life. |

Operation | Scholven-Buer synthetic oil plant. 324 aircraft, 4 losses (1.2%). Thick cloud necessitated the use of Oboe sky-markers. Bombing was accurate and the refinery was badly damaged. The local report states that 300 high-explosive bombs fell in the compound. The local towns of Scolven and Buer was also hit and the nearby coal mine was damaged. |
