Miscellaneous Information
Jacob was born on 31 July 1923 at Toronto. Both parents were born in Russia, his father in Minsk and who worked as a truck driver. He attended Clinton Public School, Toronto 1928-1938 (general); Harboard Collegiate Institute, Toronto 1938-1940 (Matric); Central Technical school, Toronto 1941 onwards. He also trained at Galt Aircraft school in 1941. His sport interests were swimming, softball and basketball. He also had a St.John’s Ambulance Certificate. He worked as a messenger during 1937 and also during the holidays of 1939 and 1940. In 1938 he was working as a news agent. He attended the Hebrew Free School and was a member of the Junior Young Israel Group at YMHA. |
Jacob enlisted on 6 December 1941 and after initial training embarked from New York on 9 March 1943 for the U.K. After arriving at 3PRC on 18 March 1943, he went to 426 Sqn 27 March 1943, 433 Sqn 8 April 1943, 61 Base 28 July 1944 and then 419 Squadron on 7 September 1944, whilst flying on his 16th op. |

Operation | Scholven-Buer synthetic oil plant. 324 aircraft, 4 losses (1.2%). Thick cloud necessitated the use of Oboe sky-markers. Bombing was accurate and the refinery was badly damaged. The local report states that 300 high-explosive bombs fell in the compound. The local towns of Scolven and Buer was also hit and the nearby coal mine was damaged. |
