Miscellaneous Information
Laird was born at Wallaceburg, Ontario on 5 September 1921. His father was born in Southampton, England and worked as a Foreman and his mother was born in Newfoundland. He had brothers Francis and Alvin and a sister Brenda. Two other brothers had died as babies: Edward at just 5 days old and another, Kelvin, was 6 days old. Laird had attended Riverside School in Montreal 1926-1928 (public) followed by Lorne school 1928-1938. He had also taken private lessons 1933-1937 (private commercial). The sports he took part in were basketball, skiing, baseball and soccer. He went to work for Canadian Car & Foundry, Montreal, as a Timekeeper from 1937 until enlisting on 17 June 1942. |

Operation | Arras- to attack lines of communication. Part of a 671 aircraft force to further hamper lines of communications leading to the Normandy area. Cambrai and Caen attacks were scattered but Amiens, Arras and Poitiers were accurate. 23 aircraft were Lost (3.4%) including that of Charles Mynarski VC, the subject of the Canadian Lancaster 'Vera'. |
