Miscellaneous Information
| James was born on 20 April 1924 at Calgary, Alberta. Both parents were born at Drayton, Ontario and his father worked as a Fireman with C.P.R. He had three brothers: Cecil Robert Byers, Sgt. John Elwood Byers, who served with the Canadian Headquarters in Italy, and a third brother, Sgt.Carl Alexander Byers, who served as a paratrooper with the Canadian Special Service Battn. and sadly lost his life on 29 February 1944. He died of wounds received at Anzio beachhead. He attended East Calgary Bung 1930-1937, Colonel Walker Junior High 1937-1940 and Crescent Heights 1940-1942. The sports he was interested in were basketball, skating and swimming and also youth training. James worked at the CPR Yard office as a Call Boy, 1941-1942 and then as a Checker until enlisting on 15 October 1942. |
| After training he was posted to the U.K. and embarked from New York on 8 October 1943 arriving at 3PRC on 17 October. He then went to 82 OTU on 9 November 1943, 61 Base 10 March 1944 and 78 Squadron 26 April 1944. Sadly this young man lost his life on 13 June 1944 at the age of twenty years. |

| Operation | Amiens to bomb railway installations. Part of a 671 aircraft force to further hamper lines of communications leading to the Normandy area. Cambrai and Caen attacks were scattered but Amiens, Arras and Poitiers were accurate. 23 aircraft were Lost (3.4%) including that of Charles Mynarski VC, the subject of the Canadian Lancaster 'Vera'. |
