Miscellaneous Information
Albert was born on 11 December 1885 in Derby, Derbyshire, although in official documents he claimed to be two years younger. Before the outbreak of World War I, Albert was employed as a GPO Exchange Inspector. He enlisted in the RFC in December 1915 and embarked for France in May 1916, working as a telecommunications operative with 13 Kite Balloon Company. Albert was later attached to 8 Balloon Company and was officially transferred into the RAF on 1 April 1918. In April 1920 Albert left the RAF but remained in the Reserve, working as a Post Office Engineer and later an Antiques Dealer. In March 1939, Albert volunteered for the Overseas Service Reserve, was re-mustered as an Aircraft Hand (Telecomms) but was deemed fit for Home Service only. In June 1939 Albert was called up for Service and, despite being allocated for Home Service only, Albert went to France with 18 Sqn and was based in Méharicourt, France. |
