| Reason for Aircraft Loss | At 2127 hrs an R/T message was received from the Wellington asking whether it was over RAF Honington, Suffolk. As the return ETA was over an hour away it suggests that the crew were lost and/or disorientated. At 2136 the crew reported engine trouble, probably due to severe icing before an SOS was made at 2218. At 2221 the Wellington crashed into the North Sea in the area west of the West Frisian Islands, killing all on board. Despite an all-day search the following day by crews from RAF Honington, RAF Feltwell, RAF Watton and RAF East Wretham, for a dinghy, no sign was seen. |
