In de nacht van 22 op 23 Juni 1943 stortte in deze omgeving een vliegtuig neer. De Lancaster bommenwerper van de Britse luchtmacht (RAF) was op de terugweg van Mülheim in Duitsland. Boven Maarn werd het vliegtuig getroffen door vijandig vuur. Het kwam her terecht, op het heideveld naast boerderij Aarendal. De zeven bemanningsleden kwamen om het leven. ED599 van 156 Sqn RAF
Translation "On the night of 22 to 23 June 1943, a plane crashed in this area. The Lancaster bomber of the British Air Force (RAF) was on its way back from Mülheim in Germany. Above Maarn, the plane was hit by enemy fire. It ended up here, on the heath field next to Aarendal farm. The seven crew members lost their lives. ED5699 of 156 Sqn RAF" |

| Operation | Mülheim. 557 aircraft, 35 losses (6.3%) A thin layer of cloud hampered PFF marking efforts which were, nevertheless accurate (as detailed by the German report on the raid). As a result the bombing was concentrated and devastated this small town. All communications were cut off from Oberhausen, on which Mülheim was dependent for emergency services. 578 deaths and 1135 homes destroyed. A post war British report put the damage at 64% of the town. |
