Miscellaneous Information
His parents did not marry and Roland took his mother's maiden name. He lived with his Grandparents, Edward Charles and Florence Balsdon, of Portsmouth, and was educated at Portsmouth Grammar School. On leaving school at 18 he volunteered and was sent to USA for Pilot training and then to Canada for Air Bomber training. |

Operation | Cologne. 202 aircraft, 14 Lost (6.9%). H2S equipped heavy bomber marking. The target was cloud covered and several PFF aircraft had difficulty with their H2S sets so the main force bombing was consequently scattered. The Kalk chemical works was burned out. |
