John was born in Toronto on 31 July 1920. His father was a Stockbroker, born in Prince Albert, Saskatchewan and his mother was born in Toronto. John had one brother, Hugh Stuart Bain. His schooling was at Whitney Public, 1926-1934, taking courses Junior and Senior (entrance), North Toronto Collegiate, 1934-1939, Junior Matric, and North Toronto Vocational, 1939-1940 Matric Junior and part Senior Matric. He enlisted on 8 October 1940 immediately upon leaving school. |
After his early training, John embarked from Halifax on 5 July 1941, to the U.K., arriving at 3 PRC on 20 July 1941, 23 OTU 9 August ,149 Sqn 25 September 1941 and 156 Squadron on 14 February 1942. |
John was a Member of the Toronto Ski Club and the Swimming Club and he he enjoyed boxing, rugby, swimming, cricket, riding and ski racing. |
