| John was born in Fort William, Ontario on 16 January 1919. His father was born in Isiola, Michigan USA and worked as a Tinsmith in the Provincial Paper Mill. His mother in Fort William. He attended Prospect Central School 1925-1934 , a Public School education, then three years at Port Arthur Technical 1934-1937 where he took the Industrial Arts Course and majored in Machine Shop. John worked as a Tallyman at Thunder Bay Mill, 1937-1938, then as an engineer for the Dept.of Highways, 1938-1939, as an Assistant Timekeeper for Raynor Construction during 1939 and as a clerk with the City Assessment Department from 1939 onwards. |
| He enlisted on 25 October 1940 and after training embarked for the U.K. on 19 June 1941. Arriving at 3 PRC on 1 July 1941, he then went to 22 OTU 28 October 1941 and 142 Squadron on 7 May 1942. |
| The sports he enjoyed were golf, swimming ,hockey and baseball. |
