Miscellaneous Information
Born 3 December 1919 on a farm near Durham, Ontario. His parents were also born near Durham and his father was a well known local farmer. The address they used was R.R. No.3 Durham. He was one of seven children having three brothers and three sisters. His elder brother was in the army (the Grey and Simcoe Foresters Militia). Howard also served with this unit between March 1939 and July 1940. The schools he attended were S.S No 2. Egremont, 1926-1933 (junior Matric.) Durham High School 1934-1940 (Middle School) and also Durham High, (Upper School), except for years 1935-1936. Howard also worked as a farm hand between July and September 1940.. He had tried to enlist in 1938 but had been told he had to wait for an opening. |
Howard eventually enlisted on 26 August 1940 and after early training embarked for the U.K. He arrived at 3 PRC on 17 July 1941, 22 OTU on 28 October 1941 and finally reached 103 Squadron on 7 May 1942. He lost his life just two weeks later. |
The sports he was interested in were softball and rugby and he liked to go hunting. |
