Miscellaneous Information
Born 10 October 1921, Northern Ireland. His father was a shipwright. He had a brother John and a sister Ellen. He was educated at Cliftonville Road and Boys Model School near Queens University, Belfast. |
In 1938 joined the Air Ministry at Berkeley Square. On 13 January 1939 he was appointed to Clerical Class in the London Gazette. Later in 1939 he left London to escape the bombing and went to Harrogate. He enlisted in March 1941 and in 1942 trained in Canada and Florida, USA. His first tour was with 49 Squadron, where he undertook 27 Ops between May 1943 and January 1944. On 4 February 1944 he was promoted to Flight Lieutenant. On 5 February 1944 he was screened from Ops and sent to 1661 HCU Winthorpe where he established their Radar Navigation Section. On 15 February 1944 his DFC appeared in the Gazette. He returned to Ops at Coningsby, by then he was engaged to be married. He was the Squadron Navigation Leader. |
