Avro Lancaster JB409 - De Lancaster Mk.III (JB409) van No.626 Sqn RAF Bomber Command was 11 Mei 1944 21.56 ur gestart van vliegveld Wickenby in Lincolnshire, United Kingdom en behoorde tot de aanvalsmacht voor een bombardement op een spoorwegstelsel bij Hasselt in Belgie. Vanwege een dikke laag mist werd de missie afgeblazen en vlogen de 39 Lancasters retour naar het Verenigd Koninkrijk. Tijdens de terugreis werd één van de Lancasters van het 626 Sqn met code naam UM-P2 en serienummer JB409 net na middernacht getroiten door een Duitse nachtjager ter hoogte van Krabbendijke. De machine crashte bij Krabbendijke tegen de Noorddijk. Het vliegtuig had de bommenlast nog aan boord en explodeerde. De resten van het vliegtuig lagen over een oppervlakte van enkele honderden meters verspreid. De gehele 7-koppige bemanning kwam bi het ongeval om het leven
Translation "Avro Lancaster JB409. The Lancaster Mk. III (JB409) of No. 626 Sqn RAF Bomber Command left the airport of Wickenby in Lincolshire, United Kingdom, on 11 May 1944 at 21.56 and was part of the attacking force in a bombardment on a railwav near Hasselt in Belgium. The mission was aborted due to heavy fog and the 39 Lancasters flew back to the United kingdom. On the way home one of the Lancasters of the 626 squadron, code name UM-P2 and serial number JB409. was shot down bv a German nightfighter over the region of Krabbendike. The plane crashlanded near Krabbendijke on the 'Noorddik'. The Airplane still carrying the bombload exploded. The remains of the airplane were scattered over an area of several hundreds of meters. All seven of the crewmembers died during this accident." |
