Born on 11 November 1921. A native of Earlsdon, Coventry, he resided with his parents at 32 Stanley Road. His education was received at Bablake School from 1933 to 1938. His Headmaster's report stated "his conduct is uniformly good and he is a very painstaking neat worker with accuracy, care and power of application above the average. His character is good and is uniformly consistent.
