Translation "Avro Lancaster JB409. The Lancaster Mk. III (JB409) of No. 626 Sqn RAF Bomber Command left the airport of Wickenby in Lincolshire, United Kingdom, on 11 May 1944 at 21.56 and was part of the attacking force in a bombardment on a railwav near Hasselt in Belgium. The mission was aborted due to heavy fog and the 39 Lancasters flew back to the United kingdom. On the way home one of the Lancasters of the 626 squadron, code name UM-P2 and serial number JB409. was shot down bv a German nightfighter over the region of Krabbendike. The plane crashlanded near Krabbendijke on the 'Noorddik'. The Airplane still carrying the bombload exploded. The remains of the airplane were scattered over an area of several hundreds of meters. All seven of the crewmembers died during this accident." |
