Miscellaneous Information
Donald was born on 23 July 1919 at Napier, Ontario. His father, a clergyman, was born in Glasgow, Scotland and died in 1941, and his mother was born at Lucknow, Ontario. He had two brothers, William Douglas, who was in the RCAF overseas and Robert Clark. He went to Mulverton School, Ontario 1925-1929 and Chesley Avenue, London, 1929-1932. He was then at Beck Collegiate Institute, London, Ontario 1932-1934 and Dundalk High 1934-1939. The sports he joined in with were hockey, rugby, tennis, swimming, baseball and golf. His hobbies were stamp collecting and music, the latter of which he studied for twelve years. Donald worked in the stock room/order office of a wholesale hardware firm , Howdens, in Toronto, between 1939 and 1941 and had also worked as a clerk at C.K. Armstrong, in Dundalk during 1938-1939 for several months. He enlisted on 7 January 1941. His wife was stationed at RCAF station, Trenton. |
After enlisting and completion of training Donald was posted to the U.K. and embarked from Halifax on 13 September 1943 arriving at 3PRC on 20 September. He then went to 1(0) AFU on 18 January 1944, 11 Base 24 April 1944 and was at 576 Squadron on 14 June 1944. Sadly the following month on 15 July 1944, just days before his 25th cirthday, Donald lost his life. |
